One of our most popular courses is Gamer – a unique program that teaches young students to create, build and code their very own video games. It sounds difficult, but at VentureLab, we make it easy to make your own video game.
Here’s how it works:
- We work with a programming application called Floors, which uses a visual, design-based approach to teach game logic and design.
- Students will test and provide feedback on each other’s game prototypes, doing market research to determine what needs improvement, editing and enhancing.
- Games will be edited based on the research feedback, with students adding levels, new characters, additional features and more.
- Finally, students work with each other to create their own game companies. They’ll come up with a name, pricing strategy, marketing campaign and more, and be ready to speak about their target market and audience in a presentation!
Once the course is over, teams will get to take games home, so they can continue building and tweaking games until they’re just right. If students are really excited about their final product, they can even take steps to bring it to market. Sites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo and GoFundMe offer great ways to raise money even with limited resources.
In addition to crowd-funding, students can also seek funding from outside businesses and investors. Just take our past student, Estrella Hernandez: she created an iPhone app in our Girl Startup program, and has since then acquired $200,000 in funding!
