Pitching a product can be intimidating, but here at VentureLab, students as young as 5 work in groups to present their projects each week. Pitching develops confidence in students, and helps build important skills such as teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking. As parents and educators, we try to prepare our students for this all week.
Here are five questions to ask at home to get your innovator in the pitching mood!
- Tell me about your product! — Asking open-ended questions is a great way to kick things off - avoid simple “yes and no” responses and encourage your child to think critically about their product.
- Who are your customers? Why? — Knowing your market is key to a successful product! This question will prepare your innovator to make sure they understand who they will try to sell to in the Marketplace tomorrow.
- Who are your competitors? — Successful entrepreneurs create products that are specific to a niche – however, most products will have competitors. Students should know their competitors and what makes their product different! Help your student consider other similar products, where they sell their products, and who their target market is.
- Practice your pitch for me! — Confidence is key when it comes to pitching! Help your students feel comfortable and supported by practicing their pitch with them. This will help students tomorrow and give you a chance to see a sneak peek of all the creativity to come.
- What has been your favorite part of the week? — Entrepreneurship isn’t just work, work, work – it involves a ton of creativity and fun! Help your child foster inspiration and creativity by focusing on the positive aspects of the week. Talk about activities, friends, and products to get them into the pitching mood!
Ask these questions on the drive home, at supper, or before bed. Pitch day is our favorite day of the week and we are excited to welcome you and your student to this energizing day!
