Maker Monday - Edible playdough recipe

At VentureLab, we strongly believe in hands-on activities -  we love digging in elbows deep and learning by doing. That philosophy guides all of our programs, and we think that's one reason students get so much out of their learning experiences here. In this environment, they are empowered to create! Our Maker Monday activities will hopefully let you bring some of that energy back home.

This activity is in the category of things that are literally "elbows deep". You will get a bit messy if you make our edible playdough, but it's an awesome way to allow younger students to get creative without worrying if they eat their building blocks.

Instructions

  • 1/4 jar (about 5 0z) creamy peanut butter
  • 1/3 jar (about 5 oz) plain frosting
  • 1 handful powdered milk

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Mix thoroughly, taking care to remove any lumps created by the powdered milk. This is easiest if you do it with your hands! Be sure to play on a clean surface.

Tips

  • Make sure you use true powdered milk, not flakes.
  • Store playdough covered in the fridge when not in use.

Variations

  • Playdough can change with the addition of flavoring, different kinds of frosting, or food coloring.
  • The main components of this dough are the base (peanut butter and frosting) along with a binder (powdered milk). There are lots of ways to make edible playdough as long as you have these two - perhaps oatmeal, flour and water, or chocolate and corn syrup? Try them all out and tell us how it goes!
